New Delhi: Hon’ble Supreme Court Again Warns – Himalaya Along With Himachal Faces Disaster Risk
The Hon’ble Supreme Court has once again expressed serious concern over the environmental fragility of the Himalayan region. A PIL regarding environmental protection and climate sensitivity of Himachal was heard in the Supreme Court. During the hearing, the court stated that not only Himachal Pradesh but the entire Himalayan region is under the threat of natural disasters, and this year their impact has been particularly violent. The next hearing in this matter will be held on September 23.
Earlier, in August 2025, a two-judge bench took suo motu cognizance and sought an action plan from both the state government and the central government. The state government’s report mentioned that the number of glaciers in Himachal Pradesh has declined, which is a clear sign of climate change. The report also highlighted that incidents of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides have increased.
The report further stated that hydropower projects may not be the primary cause of devastation in the state. It is noteworthy that in the July 28 hearing, the Supreme Court had observed – if construction activities and development projects in Himachal continue without a scientific approach, the day is not far when Himachal may vanish from the map of India, God forbid. Now, the Hon’ble Court has warned about the disaster risk across the Himalayan region, which raises a big question mark over the existence of Himachal.
