Dharamshala: CU to Launch Chinese Language Course for Army Personnel, Will Be Nation’s First Centre
The Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) is set to launch a special six-month Chinese language course exclusively for Indian Army personnel — a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country.
This course will begin from the next academic session and has already been forwarded for approval to the Central Government. CUHP will become India’s first academic institution to offer language training for soldiers deployed along the India-China border.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Sat Prakash Bansal stated that this course may later be expanded into a one or two-year diploma program.
Beneficial for Both Army and Tourism Sectors
While this course is primarily designed for military use, it could also prove beneficial in sectors like tourism, foreign relations, and strategic communication.
For soldiers posted on border areas, language skills will aid not just in communication but also in intelligence gathering and situational awareness.
In the initial phase, guest faculty will be appointed to teach the Chinese language, and permanent staff will be considered as the program develops.
A First and Unique Initiative in the Country
This marks the first time a central university in India is taking such an initiative, which may inspire other institutions to launch similar strategic and defence-related academic programs.
In light of growing geopolitical tensions along the India-China border, this program is seen as especially relevant, as linguistic competence can often provide a tactical edge.
